The Gopher Problem in Southern California

Gophers are a persistent problem for homeowners across the San Fernando Valley and Ventura County. These small burrowing mammals are particularly drawn to properties with irrigated lawns, lush gardens, and well-maintained landscaping — in other words, exactly the kind of outdoor spaces you work hard to create.

If you've noticed crescent-shaped mounds of dirt popping up in your yard, scattered soil across your lawn, or areas of grass that are suddenly dying, you're likely dealing with gophers. And once they establish themselves, the problem only gets worse.

What Gophers Can Damage

Gophers are herbivores that feed on plant roots, tubers, and bulbs. But their damage extends far beyond what they eat:

  • Lawns and turf: Their tunnels collapse as they dig, creating unsightly dead patches and uneven ground
  • Garden beds: They devour vegetables, flowers, and ornamental plants from the roots up
  • Root systems: Even plants that appear healthy above ground can die when gophers eat their underground root systems
  • Irrigation lines: Gophers frequently chew through underground sprinkler pipes and drip lines, causing leaks and water waste
  • Underground utilities: In rare cases, they've been known to damage communication cables and other underground utilities
  • Hardscaping: Their tunneling can undermine patios, walkways, retaining walls, and even building foundations over time

The mounds and tunnels are also tripping hazards for children playing in the yard and can damage lawn mowers and other equipment.

Why Store-Bought Traps Don't Work

Walk into any hardware store and you'll find gopher traps and repellents lining the shelves. While these products may seem like a cost-effective solution, they rarely deliver results — and here's why:

  • Trap placement is tricky: Gophers create complex tunnel systems. Setting traps in the wrong location — even by inches — means you'll never catch anything.
  • Reading tunnels takes experience: Professional gopher control technicians learn to identify main tunnels vs. lateral tunnels, fresh mounds vs. old ones, and active vs. abandoned systems.
  • Repellents are temporary: Sound devices and smell-based repellents may deter gophers temporarily, but they adapt and return once the "threat" is gone.
  • One gopher isn't the whole problem: If you have an active infestation, you're likely dealing with multiple gophers — and possibly new ones moving in from neighboring properties.

At Enviroworx, we use professional trapping methods that are effective, humane, and environmentally responsible. Trapping is the most reliable approach — and when done correctly by experienced technicians, it eliminates gopher problems for good.

Site Assessment

We inspect your property to identify active tunnels, mound patterns, and the extent of the infestation. This tells us exactly where to focus our efforts.

Professional Trapping

We use proven trapping techniques and place traps in the optimal positions within the tunnel system. Our technicians know how to set traps for results.

Follow-Up & Prevention

We return to check traps, remove captured gophers, and verify the problem is resolved. We can also advise on landscape modifications to make your yard less attractive to future gophers.
